Hi Taryn. I'm glad to hear that you will be upgrading to the 55 gallon, the sooner the better! The shark should do fine with the algae eater, gourami, and some of the other fish too (though each fish has an individual personality). As long as you have plenty of decoration, he should be comfortable.I would say that the 20 gallon is definitely close to being overloaded if not already. You can add a small amount of salt to the tank without causing any harm to the fish that do not tolerate brackish water, though it is not necessary for fish like cory's, sharks and gouramis. Other fish in the tank would actually benefit from being in brackish conditions, (the dragon goby, shrimp, and mollies), so you may want to consider keeping the 20 gallon as a brackish aquarium for those items. One other thing to consider is the clawed frog...it will eventually predate the shrimp and smaller fish like the mollies, even if it is small now its appetite is much larger! Good luck, and please let us know if you have any other questions.

my boyfriend has a 20 gallon but in a year or less if we can brake our lease early, we will be getting a 55gallon. Anyways we have in the 20g Shelf style:
1rainbow shark (3inchs now)
1 dwarf gouramie (Male)
2 Molly's
1 Albino Clawed Dwarf frog
1 Micky Mouse high fined Platy
1 Dragon Golby
1 mini male Crab
1 Cory
1 Chinese algae eater
Ghost Shrimp

Floating Plant(real ones) that keep falling to the bottom for some reason ???
1Big Moss Ball
1Anubias Plant
1Some other plant that has white stripes
Drift Wood w/a plant
A Coco nut w/moss

I just want to know if all this including the plant is a good combo for the rainbow shark and if its over crowded?
Also Can I get away w/ a little Marine salt every two weeks?
I've been doing Aquarium every week but only 1 tablespoon.

Thank you for all your help
